Thieves use forklift in ATM heist attempt

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Police in the Lowcountry are looking for thieves who used a forklift to try to steal an automatic teller machine.

It happened early Monday in the Knightsville community just outside Summerville.

Gregory Drexler says he had stopped at a convenience store when he saw another man using a forklift to try to rock the ATM at the nearby First Federal Savings and Loan off its foundation.

Drexler called police and yelled at the bandits who sped off in a pickup truck.

Police say the forklift was stolen from a nearby construction site. It was still running when Dorchester County sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Drexler says people work hard for their money and others shouldn’t steal it.
