DNA Links Man To Murder

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities say DNA linked a man currently in jail on a burglary charge to an unsolved killing in Sumter County three years ago. Investigators said they collected DNA from 51-year-old James Earnest Butler after he was arrested in May on a burglary charge. The State Law Enforcement Division recently matched that DNA sample to evidence collected from 66-year-old James Davis’ home. Police say Davis was killed in his Sumter home in February 2009 by a blow to his head during a burglary. Investigators had exhausted all their leads before getting the DNA match. Butler has been sent to a state prison to serve a sentence on unrelated charges. He will be brought back to Sumter County to face charges later. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
