Judges decision could free mother of missing toddler.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “She is entitled by law to a reasonable bond based on the charges against her,” says Zinah’s attorney, Hemphill Pride, II. Monday, Zinah Jennings appeared in a Richland County courtroom, but remained quiet. Instead, her attorney, Hemphill Pride, II spoke on her behalf to request bond be reduced. “I would ask you for a reasonable bond and to reduce the $150,000 bond,” says Pride. Zinah Jennings is currently charged with unlawful conduct towards a child after police says he repeatedly lied to them about the whereabouts of her son, 18 month old Amir Jennings. Police say Amir hasn’t been seen since Thanksgiving. “We still at this point have not been told by Mrs. Jennings or anyone where her son is,” Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott. But her attorney says, she has the right to remain silent. “She’s charged with a crime and for some reason they think if you’re charged with a crime and you don’t cooperate with them, then you are a flight risk,” says Pride. “Ms. Jennings has displayed everything, every example of being a flight risk,” says Chief Scott “The real reason the police department is holding her is in violation of her constitutional right to remain silent,” says Pride. The prosecution also mentioned the fact that Zinah is pregnant and has been declared mentally ill. But as for now, Zinah’s fate is in the hands of Judge Manning as both parties wait on his ruling.
