Consultant helps SC resort with development rules
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Hilton Head Island has hired a consulting firm to help redraw its development rules.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/Am2seT ) that Clarion Associates will help the town with the rules.
There is concern that regulations 20-years ago designed to slow rapid growth are now obstacles blocking reinvestment by businesses and residents.
The idea is to streamline existing rules by eliminating unnecessary reviews by boards and commissions. The new rules could include a broader range of land uses and incentives to encourage redevelopment of key areas on the resort island.
Revising the rules is expected to cost about $200,000 and take about eight months to complete. The public is being consulted about how the rules should be changed.
