Cops: Greer robbery suspect’s brother gave her gun

GREER, S.C. (AP) — The brother of a Greer woman police say died in a robbery attempt has been charged with giving his sister the gun she used to shoot and kill a homeowner.

Police say 21-year-old Michael Antoninius Weatherspoon was arrested late Wednesday and charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy.

Authorities say Weatherspoon gave his sister the gun that she used to try to rob 62-year-old Douglas J. Burgess Jr. Police said Burgess answered his door Monday morning and found a woman asking for money. Investigators say when Burgess refused, the woman pulled a gun and so did he.

Each of them fired once. Burgess died at the scene, and 34-year-old Tamika Yvette Weatherspoon died in surgery.

It wasn’t known if Michael Weatherspoon had an attorney.
