Is Black History Month Still Relevant?
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — In its 36th year of observance in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, Black History Month is underway. But, is it relevant or even necessary in 2012? Professor of African American studies at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Marvin McAllister, believes the month-long observance of Black History Month is more relevant now than ever before. He cites leaders in Texas and Tennessee, who seek to change school textbooks as to not portray our country’s founding fathers as slave owners. For that reason, McAllister claims the untold stories and truths of the accomplishments of African Americans are extremely paramount. ABC Columbia News will highlight a story each week that focuses on Black History Month and its impact here in South Carolina. Be sure to tune in at 6 & 11.
