First woman, black heads Horry County police
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Horry County has its first female and its first black police chief.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (http://bit.ly/wKgdHJ ) that Saundra Rhodes hopes her success will help open the doors to others who apply to become officers. Rhodes is a captain serving as interim chief. She’s a 19-year law enforcement veteran.
She began her new job Monday after the retirement last week of Johnny Morgan, who served 38 years with the Horry County police.
County Public Safety Director Paul Whitten is handling the hiring of a new chief. There is no time schedule for hiring a permanent chief.
