Runway work delayed at Charleston International

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Work has been delayed on rebuilding the main runway serving the Charleston International Airport and the Charleston Air Force Base.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/yQPGQm) the $50 million project was to have begun March 1. An Air Force spokesman says while there is no set time to begin, work is expected to start this year.

Capt. Frank Hartnett says work has been delayed so the contractor can get a construction safety plan approved among other things. The delay should shorten the time the runway is closed.

Parts of the main 9,000-foot runway were built in the 1940s. The work is expected to take nine months. Commercial and Air Force flights will be diverted to a 7,000-foot runway.
