More than 3 tons of steel stolen on SC coast

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Thieves have taken more than 3 tons of stainless steel from a maintenance yard on Hilton Head Island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/ytqBmp ) about 7,000 pounds of bolts, washers, plates and other items have been taken from a storage container in Sea Pines Plantation. The steel is valued at almost $150,000.

Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies say the materials were stolen sometime between Jan. 20 and last week. The steel was being used to repair the bulkhead at the Harbour Town Yacht Basin.

Yacht club manager Bob Long says it would have taken three or four people about an hour to put all the steel in a pickup truck.
