Bill Creates SC Medal of Valor

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The state Senate has approved a bill to create a South Carolina medal recognizing fallen military service members with ties to the state. Sen. Thomas Alexander said Friday the state Medal of Valor would recognize those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for America’s freedoms. The Walhalla Republican says such an award is long overdue. Senators unanimously approved the measure Thursday. Another perfunctory vote is needed to send it to the House. The new medal would be awarded posthumously for South Carolinians killed in action. Their families would receive the award. Recipients’ names will be added to the South Carolina Medal of Valor roll, maintained by the adjutant general’s office. A similar measure creating the state Medal of Honor has been introduced in the House.
