North Myrtle Beach looking at city coin

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — It won’t help buy suntan lotion or a T-shirt, but North Myrtle Beach is looking at minting its own city coin.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (http://bit.ly/ytZdqv) North Myrtle Beach City Council members who saw a prototype Monday liked the idea.

City spokesman Pat Dowling says the coin is needed when officials want to present someone a memento of the city. The city has nothing like it, although on very special occasions the key to the city is given to distinguished guests.

The city is considering a gold coin with the city’s logo on the front and the names of the four communities that joined to form the city on the reverse. Those towns are Windy Hill, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive and Cherry Grove.
