SC deputy injured, 1 dead in violent traffic stop

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) — One man has died and a Kershaw County deputy has been hurt after a traffic stop that turned violent.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says 26-year-old Melvin Lawhorn was shot and killed Tuesday night during the incident.

Matthews says 52-year-old Darryl Herbert was driving a pickup stopped by two deputies. The sheriff says Lawhorn jumped over Herbert and hit the gas, causing the pickup to hit one deputy and drag him down the road.

Matthews says the deputy shot Lawhorn, who was later found dead in the pickup. Hebert has been charged with failure to stop for police and driving under the influence. It isn’t clear whether he has an attorney.

Matthews says the deputy was treated and released from the hospital and is on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
