COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “Whenever I heard that Fargo died because he did not have a vest on, I wanted for them to have a vest on so they could be protected,” says Madison Burrows, who started “Friends of Fargo.” At just 9 years old, Madison Burrows is taking on a task that some may say is far beyond her years. “He was a really good K-9 officer and I feel really sad that happened, but I wish it wouldn’t have happened, I wish we could have though of this idea earlier,” says Burrows. Madison is working to make sure K-9 officers in South Carolina have bullet-proof vests. “So they can be protected,” says Burrows. Madison’s Mom, Brandi Burrows says the idea was something Madison came up with on her own. But, that was just the start. They needed approval from both the IRS and the Secretary of State in order to take donations. Once they received the proper paperwor, “Friends of Fargo,” became a reality. “I feel really good because I’m doing something good for the K-9 officers and they deserve it,” says Burrows. Crandall Sims reporting, “At just 7 years old, Enzo will be the first dog to receive a protective vest through the Friends of Fargo project. Right now, Madison has raised several hundred dollars, but she needs your help because just one vest costs nearly $1,000” “We’ve got a Facebook page and we are putting fliers out everywhere,” says Burrows. South Congaree police officer, Roger Singleton is Enzo’s partner; for him, this project means a lot. “It’s pretty special special, 9 year olds have a lot of other things that they could be thinking about besides police officers and police dogs. So for Madison to do this it’s pretty special,” says Deputy Singleton. Enzo is the only K-9 on the force for the South Congaree Police Department, but for Madison he’s become a friend. “He’s very playful and he’s very sweet,” says Burrows.
