Gutierrez fights to block SC worker’s deportation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — An Illinois congressman is returning to the Carolinas to fight the deportation of a South Carolina worker.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez is returning to Charlotte Tuesday for another hearing before the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau in the case of 27-year-old construction worker Gabino Sanchez of Ridgeland, S.C.

Gutierrez visited Charleston last November for an initial hearing.

Sanchez was arrested on a traffic violation and found to be an illegal immigrant.

But Gutierrez has argued the case should be dropped under a policy that provides for prosecutorial discretion. Sanchez, who arrived from Mexico almost 14 years ago, has a wife and two children who are citizens. He has never before been arrested.
