Forest fire scorches 70 acres in Pee Dee

BRITTON’S NECK, S.C. (AP) — Fire crews have contained a wildfire that burned about 70 acres in Marion County near the community of Britton’s Neck.

South Carolina Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins says the fire was reported Tuesday afternoon and five forestry commission plow crews, along with a truck and an airplane were sent to the scene. At one point, flames were leaping 40 feet into the air.

Hawkins says the flames settled down Tuesday night. He says the area that was burned was mostly pine forest.
