SC House Democrats Try to Give Employees a Bonus
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ South Carolina Democrats are trying to give state employees a one-time bonus in November, saying legislators need to recognize their service. The bonus would be in addition to the 2 percent raises called for in the Ways and Means’ budget plan. House Minority Leader Harry Ott says public workers deserve a raise after three years without, noting that furloughs have lessened their paychecks. He proposes giving a 1 percent bonus for workers making less than $50,000. Those earning more would receive $500. Democrats say the 2 percent raises will be gobbled up by increases in health care and retirement contributions. Ott’s amendment would shift $37.5 million designated to the state’s savings account, since the Ways and Means’ plan puts an additional $60 million in the account than state law requires.
