Bluffton school works to eradicate lice oubreak
BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) — A Bluffton elementary school has called in a team of nurses to help eradicate an outbreak of lice among students.
The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/Aeql7j ) that all students at Michael C. Riley Elementary School were screened by six district nurses on Friday.
Principal Adrienne Sutton says tiny lice eggs called nits have been found in the hair of about 60 of the school’s 767 students since March 6. Two students had live lice in their hair.
Sutton says parents have been notified and instructed about how to kill the insects and eliminate the eggs.
Lice outbreaks are more commonly found at schools during the fall or early summer. Sutton says the mild winter this year might be to blame for the relatively early rash of cases.
