AT&T Helping to boost High School Graduation Rates
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ AT&T is encouraging South Carolina groups to apply for a piece of $250 million to be distributed nationwide for programs that boost high school graduation rates. AT&T South Carolina President Pamela Lackey joined school and state officials at C.A. Johnson High School in Columbia on Monday, as AT&T announced the $250 million commitment over five years. The company already has spent more than $100 million since 2008 on education programs for students at risk of dropping out. The company says the expanded effort will include a more socially innovative approach, using technology to connect with students. It also involves AT&T employees mentoring students and providing internships. Lackey says education represents the key to unlocking students’ future. She says American business has an enormous stake in students successfully entering the workforce.
