COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Cheers could be heard loud and clear in the Lady Gamecock locker room, Monday night. A video posted on www.gamecocksonline.com, shows the team celebrating their victory that advances them to the Sweet Sixteen. Fans back here at home are glad to see the team succeed. “It’s awesome they made it, I’m so proud they did,” says Sarah Davis, USC student. “I’m really glad that our Lady Gamecocks has made it this far,” says another USC student. Right now, bookstores across Columbia say the team’s success in the NCAA tournament hasn’t hit the cash register just yet, but they are standing by ready if the team continues it’s so far, successful dance in the big dance. But could the somewhat lack of hype be because fans didn’t exactly see this coming? “I didn’t see this coming at the beginning of the season, but they’ve done well so far,” says Davis. Crandall Sims reporting,”Even before leaving for the NCAA Tournament, this year’s team’s success was evident here at Colonial Life Arena. Out of the past five seasons, this year’s team has the best record, 23-9.” “They just have a strong team, they run offense fast, they’re scrappy. They can do a lot of things that some of the other conferences like the Big Ten, just can’t keep up with right now,” says Joe Londergan If you’re looking for a reason for that success, some students say look no further than the team’s head coach, Dawn Staley. “I think Dawn Staley is the most underrated coach at USC, so it’s great to see that she is getting some recognition for the great things she is doing with the program,” says Londergan As for the future, the team now has the attention and maybe even a little pressure. “Go women’s basketball, I hope y’all win the whole thing,” says Davis. “I just hope we win,” says one USC student. The Lady Gamecocks will take on Stanford, Saturday.
