SC inmates charges with submitting fake tax claims

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Two South Carolina prison inmates have been charged with filing more than $1 million in fake tax refund claims.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said Wednesday 32-year-old John Clayton Stone and 24-year-old Herbert Glover have been indicted on charges of conspiracy to file false claims and theft of public funds. A third person, 37-year-old Tasha Monique Glover of Grovetown, Ga., faces the same charges.

Nettles says the three used stolen identities to submit false tax refund claims, receiving about $275,000 from their scheme.

It wasn’t clear if any of the three had attorneys. Nettles says each faces a maximum possible punishment of 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

Glover is serving a 23-year sentence for armed robbery. Stone is serving 20 years for kidnapping.
