COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — For Kyle Greene, the story of Trayvon Martin hits close to home, especially after listening to the teenager’s mother speak. “She made a good point about it could be your son and I have a six year old,” says Greene. Greene says he realized he could no longer sit and watch, instead he threw out an idea on Facebook for a march. “My like button kind of lit up like a Christmas tree,” says Greene. “I am grateful that he actually did this because it’s actually something that I was hoping somebody would do,” says Melody Williams, a volunteer for Saturday’s, “A Day for Justice, 1K Hoodie March.” Friday, she helped make posters that read, ‘A March for Justice Not Race.’ “There are people of every race who has lost somebody and they feel like they were alone. In this case, we want to stand behind this family and stand behind this city,” says Williams. “I understand it as the great Doctor Martin Luther King once said, a threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice, everywhere,” says Chris Sullivan, who also plans to participate in Saturday’s march. Crandall Sims reporting, “At least one thousand people are expected to attend tomorrow’s march here at Finlay Park. Those participating are asked to bring their hoodies.” For Charles Hickman, who is also participating in the march, the event is about change. “Knowing that someone like that had that type of potential and then it was just removed like that really says something about the capabilities in this country, but also what we can do about it,” says Hickman. Hickman also says for him this generations work is far from over. “Our role here today is just as important as the role of the Vietnam protesters in the 70’s, the Civil Right’s movement in the 60’s and the Women’s rights movements in the 30’s and 40’s,” says Hickman. “A vision is now going to become a reality tomorrow morning,” says Greene. Saturday’s march will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Finlay Park.
