USC Medical training in Florence discussed

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — State and local leaders are discussing the possibility of the University of South Carolina providing training for third- and fourth-year medical students in Florence in as little as three years.

SCNow.com reports (http://bit.ly/GOT8fY ) about 20 leaders gathered Thursday to discuss the idea and the thought is it’s a matter of when, not if, it will happen.

Under the proposal, training would be a partnership between USC, Francis Marion University, Carolinas Hospital System and McLeod Health Regional Medical Center.

Initially it would involve about 25 students and cost about $1 million.

The Florence group plans to host a group from Florida to discuss how a university health system with multiple campuses was created there. Then there are plans for a feasibility study.
