COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — State Democratic Representative Bakari Sellers wants to repeal the Stand Your Ground provision in South Carolina’s self-defense law, he says, to prevent a Trayvon Martin case from becoming a reality in South Carolina. Sellers says he admits his push to repeal the provision, which permits someone to use deadly force in a public place if they feel their life is threatened, opens the door for self-made vigilantes. He believes the provision, which exists in 24 states, is the reason George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed unarmed, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida last month, has not been arrested. Sellers fears the same could happen in South Carolina. The bill is currently tabled. However, Sellers hopes lawmakers will take up the issue when they return to Session the second week of April.
