SC tobacco-growing town weighs smoking ban
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — One of South Carolina’s historic tobacco-growing communities is considering a smoking ban.
But the Conway City Council wants to hear from the public before deciding how far such a ban should go.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach (http://bit.ly/GSKf0A ) reports that city council on Monday agreed to hear from the public next month before considering the ordinance.
Councilwoman Jean Timbes says council members agree there should be a ban in government buildings and parks. But there is concern about how much farther a ban might go.
Timbes and Councilman William Goldfinch say some people are concerned about the government telling them what they can do on their own property.
State law already bans smoking in public buildings and enclosed areas in public schools.
