Chesterfield County coroner calls rare inquest

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The coroner in Chesterfield County has called a rare proceeding where a jury of six people will determine the cause of death of an Army veteran found dead at his home in November.

Coroner Kip Kiser initially ruled the death of 34-year-old Tyson “Lane” Lowery a suicide. But Kiser says he will lead an inquest April 12 at the county courthouse to take another look at the case.

Kiser refused to detail why he wants the panel to reconsider his cause of death determination in the case, and he wouldn’t say if any of Lowery’s relatives disagreed with his ruling.

Lowery was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head at his home Nov. 18, a pistol near his body

Neither Lowery’s wife nor his mother returned phone calls.
