NRC continuing to monitor SC nuclear plant

YORK, S.C. (AP) — Federal regulators are continuing to monitor a South Carolina nuclear plant that has lost external power.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Thursday that it is keeping an eye on the Catawba Nuclear Station through its on-site inspectors and officials in the regional office in Atlanta.

The station near York, S.C., about 18 miles south of Charlotte, N.C., lost offsite power on Wednesday. The plant is operated by Duke Energy, and the NRC says operators are trying to restore the power.

One of the plant’s two units was already shut down for an outage. The other unit automatically shut down after losing offsite power.

The NRC says no radiation was released, and workers and the public weren’t in danger. Officials will review the outage and determine if additional inspections are needed.
