Sheriff: SC deputy shot at motorist 11 times

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A Charleston County deputy fired 11 shots at a motorist during a traffic stop.

Sheriff Al Cannon said Wednesday that Deputy Shawn James shot as the driver charged at him, trying to hit James with his car.

Authorities say James pulled over 21-year-old Terrance Green on Monday. After Green tried to hit James with his car on Monday, they say James fired, hitting Green twice.

State police are investigating. Authorities say he is still hospitalized, charged with attempted murder and reckless driving.

James is on paid leave. Authorities say he survived a 2005 wreck with a drunken driver and shot an armed and wanted man after a chase in 2007. He spent several months on leave after the shooting, which prosecutors ruled was justified.
