Roth Gets SEC’s Top Student-Athlete Honor

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina pitcher Michael Roth was named the Southeastern Conference’s H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year. SEC commissioner Mike Slive announced Roth’s honor on Friday. Roth will receive a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship. He and women’s winner Wendy Trott of Georgia will be honored at the league’s spring meetings in Destin, Fla., next month. Roth and Trott were chosen by a committee of SEC faculty athletic representatives. Roth will earn his bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing next month. The South Carolina ace had the highest grade-point average of all players participating in last year’s College World Series. Roth was 14-3 with a 1.06 earned run average last season.
