Woodruff man gets 30 years in shooting death

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A former Woodruff city employee has pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder.

Fifty-eight-year-old Jesse Goggins was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday.

Goggins was charged with killing 39-year-old Carolyn Woody Rangel and trying to kill Tony Jones after an argument escalated into a shooting last April.

Goggins apologized before he was sentenced.

He had faced up to life in prison, but prosecutors recommended the 30-year term.

Defense attorney Robert Hall told the judge his client had been drinking before the shootings. Hall said Goggins and Rangel were in a relationship.

Goggins worked for the city of Woodruff for 38 years and was the streets and sanitation supervisor when the shootings occurred.
