COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “It’s scary, but it happens so quickly that we couldn’t even get our minds wrapped around what was going to happen,” says Tiffany Redmond. Two years ago, Tiffany Redmond’s husbnad Larry was diagnosed with ALS otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. According to the ALS Association of South Carolina, someone is diagnosed with the disease every 90 minutes and someone also dies from the disease every 90 minutes. “To wake up one day and he has the use of his arms and he can do this and the next day he can’t even scratch his head that’s, the unknown is just like, “Oh My Goodness,”what am I going to wake up to today,” says Tiffany Redmond. It started when Larry, who formerly served in the United States Air Force, noticed a limp in his leg. The limp quickly progressed into much more. “In 2010 he lost the ability to breathe on his own, by that summer he had lost the use of his upper body and you know it’s like what else is there to lose, he’s completely paralyzed,” says Tiffany Redmond. While the disease has taken a lot, the Redmonds say it hasn’t taken their will to live. They’ve invested in a special van so that Larry can still travel and tehy are also working with organizations like the ALS Association of South Carolina to raise awareness about the disease. ‘There is no cure, but there are people out there who are suffering from this and they need help,” says Tiffany Redmond. If you are interested in helping in the fight against ALS, this year’s Midlands Walf to Defeat ALS will be held at RIverfront Park/Canal Park at 312 Laurel Street, Columbia, S.C. on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
