Tax Deadline Not Same for Everyone
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Time is winding down for you to get those taxes done. The deadline is Tuesday, April 17; however, that’s not the case for everyone. The extended deadline is due to the normal tax day, April 15, falling on a Sunday. Also, the Washington DC only holiday, Emancipation Day, honoring the freeing of slaves, takes place Monday, April 16. Since the US Tax Code prohibits deadlines from falling on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays, filers got two extra days. State Department of Revenue spokesperson, Samantha Cheek, says an incentive to encourage more taxpayers to file electronically, the deadline for e-filers is two weeks, Tuesday, May 1. She says the State continues to do away with paper returns. Year after year, South Carolinians file electronically and that trend is expected to continue. Last year, 80% filed their taxes online. Cheek says the Department of Revenue is also offering a tax refund ‘drive thru’ at its headquarters, 301 Gervais St., for those who would like to drop off their paper returns. That takes place Tuesday, April 17, from 7:00am to 5:00pm. Tax refund debit cards are being offered and officials recommend direct deposit as a means of receiving tax returns quicker.
