Charleston library tossing 50,000 books
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — There’s some spring cleaning going on in Charleston.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the Charleston County Library is getting rid of 50,000 books to clear its shelves for newer material.
Library officials say most of the books are damaged, outdated histories or multiple volumes of books that were once popular and now never leave the shelves. For instance, books by attorney Marcia Clark are no longer very popular because the O.J. Simpson trial happened 20 years ago.
The library says nothing of archival value is being thrown away.
The library adds about 100,000 books a year. The older books being discarded represent about 3 percent of the library holdings.
