Deterring Distracted Drivers

(WOLO) Put the cell phones down if you’re behind the wheel. That’s the message a proposed bill is trying to send to drivers who pay more attention to their text messages then they do the road. Representative Don Bowen, who is sponsoring the bill says there is statistical data showing text and driving is just as dangerous as driving while under the influence of alcohol. In addition to the increase in text related crashes, Bowen says there are only 8 states who do not have bans in place. South Carolina is one of them. Columbia’s police department passed a similar ban nearly a year ago. While there was a lot of support behind the move a spokesperson for the department says it’s a hard ban to enforce and to date have not issued any citations. Something local drivers think will be an issue if the proposed bill which has now passed the house, passes in the senate and becomes law.
