Healing Heroes Golf Week tees off in SC Lowcountry

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Healing Heroes Golf Week is teeing off in the South Carolina Lowcountry this week.

The event sponsored by the nonprofit Independence Fund supports vets severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event gives golfers, who pay a registration fee, a chance to play with the vets.

Play begins Monday at the Callawassie Club, with a Tuesday round at the Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes. There is a Thursday round at the Sanctuary Golf Club on Cat Island and Friday play at the Fripp Island Ocean Point Links.

The goal is to raise $17,000 for a paramobile, a device allowing an injured golfer to make his way around the course but can be raised to support the player as he stands to swing.
