Feds: Pilot disoriented in SC crash that killed 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Federal investigators have determined that a Massachusetts pilot became disoriented making instrument approaches before a fatal plane crash at an RV park in North Myrtle Beach last year.

The National Transportation Safety Board found the probable cause of the January 2011 crash killed 62-year-old Kenneth Thode of Plymouth, Mass., was crash was spatial disorientation.

Investigators say Thode was practicing takeoffs and landings at an airport about a mile away when his single-engine Cessna plowed into the RV park killing another New Englander, 70-year-old Eva Sullivan of Sunapee, N.H.

The plane hit a tree, a pickup truck and a travel trailer on the ground.
