SC Sheriff: Girl suffers broken arms, leg
CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) — The Kershaw County sheriff says a mother and her live-in boyfriend have been arrested after a 4-year-old girl suffered broken arms and a broken leg.
Sheriff Jim Matthews said the girl was severely beaten and the couple failed to get medical attention for her for several months.
Twenty-four-year-old Catharine Ammons and 27-year-old James Watson of Lugoff have been charged with illegal neglect of a child. They are also facing charges of aggravated assault and battery and allowing a person to inflict harm on a child.
Hospital officials alerted the sheriff after determining the girl’s injuries were not consistent with the explanations by the caregivers.
Matthews says the girl is in intensive care with a lacerated liver and was bleeding internally.
It was not clear if Ammons and Watson have lawyers.
