SC town orders dune carpets removed or face fines
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina beach town is turning to a second neighborhood to remove carpet remnants that create a path over the sandy dunes.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/JcatyW ) the Town of Hilton Head Island has gotten Lawton Beach homeowners to pull up carpet along private beach paths and is turning to the Folly Field neighborhood.
Town attorney Brian Hulbert says island and state rules are clear that carpeting isn’t appropriate for a walkway to the beach. The town gave the Folly Field homeowners association until June to dig up layers of carpet remnants or face a fine of up to $500.
Property owners association president Jim Crispen says the carpeting was placed along three beach paths about 30 years ago at the recommendation of the Sierra Club.
