Travelers Rest school bookkeeper charged

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (AP) — A former bookkeeper at Travelers Rest High School has been arrested and charged with taking more than $10,000 from the school.

Thirty-year-old Ashley Burns of Travelers Rest was arrested Wednesday on charges of breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

An arrest warrant says the money was taken between 2007 and 2011.

Principal Lou Lavely says school personnel found missing money from various accounts. Burns resigned in August.

The principal says the money is being restored through restitution and liability insurance coverage.

Burns faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine if she is convicted. It was not clear if she has an attorney.
