Feds reviewing 2010 SC assault case

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — A Johnsonville man has been in jail more than a year as federal and state authorities decide who will handle the case against him involving the 2010 assault of a black teenager.

The Morning News of Florence reported (http://bit.ly/IXBqqz) that 22-year-old Chase McClary has been held at the Florence County Detention Center since his arrest in September 2010 on a charge of assault and battery of a high aggravated nature. He hasn’t posted his $100,000 bond.

Twelfth Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III said although the state has charges pending against McClary, his office has deferred prosecution to federal authorities because they have a hate crime statute.

U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Beth Drake said her office is reviewing the case.
