Local Girl Honored for “Friends of Fargo” project
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “I don’t want to see another K-9 hurt,” says Madison Burrows, “Friends of Fargo,” Creator. Tuesday night, nine year old Madison Burrows of South Congaree was honored for her project, “Friends of Fargo.” Her goal, to raise money for protective vests for K-9 officers throught the state. We first introduced you to her and her first recipient, Enzo, back in March. “He’s very playful,” says Madison. Madison had the honore of giving Enzo his vest, Tuesday night. But the K-9 who inspired the project was not there. Fargo, a former Richland County K-9 was killed in the line of duty last December. “Back when the incident happened in December, I was looking for some good,” says Richland County Master Deputy Warren Cavanagh. Tuesday afternoon, we were on hand as Madison met Fargo’s partner, Master Deputy Cavanagh for the very first time. For him the project means a lot. “Unprompted, unprovoked, to do this on her own at 9, that’s pretty serious that’s awesome,” says Master Deputy Cavanagh. Yet he says, there is irony in it all. “These dogs work because they love working, they depend on us, not a whole lot of thought process on their own and they just don’t know any better and I kind of feel the same with her, not a whole lot of world influence, she’s doing something from her heart,” says Master Deputy Cavanagh. “It means a lot that I can help the dogs so they can be safe,” says Madison. Madison is now working to help K-9’s in Newberry County. She hopes to be able to donate a vest to them in the coming weeks.
