Coroner: Inmate dies at jail in Gaffney
GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — The coroner is investigating the death of an inmate who died while being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center in Gaffney.
Coroner Dennis Fowler says he’s investigating the death of Rickey Lanier Gay, who was found dead Friday evening at the jail. Fowler says an officer found Gay unresponsive Friday evening when his dinner tray was delivered to his cell in the booking area.
He had last been seen alive about noon by the nurse.
Fowler has ordered an autopsy.
The coroner said Gay was arrested May 4 by a sheriff’s deputy on a charge of pointing a firearm. Fowler said the State Law Enforcement Division is also investigating the incident.
