Cherokee County inmate dies from heart attack

GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — The Cherokee County coroner says a 59-year-old inmate who died in the county jail suffered a heart attack.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said Monday that an autopsy determined no foul play in the Friday death of Rickey Gay.

Authorities say a guard delivering Gay’s dinner tray found him dead in his cell. Gay had last been seen alive nearly six hours before.

Gay had been in the jail for a week after his arrest on a charge of pointing a firearm.
