Schedule of Daufuskie Island ferry debated
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Ferry service will continue to Daufuskie Island but there’s a debate over the schedule.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/LLjIHE ) that Beaufort County is contracting with J&W Corp. for another year.
But company owner Wick Scurry wants to change the departure from Hilton Head at 9 a.m. instead of 7:15. He says it costs $250 an hour to run the boat and the later time is more convenient for tourists. Scurry says he carries three or four passengers at the earlier hour but he hopes to get ten times as many by moving the schedule.
County officials say that means Daufuskie islanders would not arrive on Hilton Head Island until 11 a.m., affecting people’s ability to get to jobs.
