Re-enactors bring history to life at Fort Moultrie
SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Various periods of history are being brought to life at Fort Moultrie.
On Saturday, re-enactors at the fort on Sullivans Island portray soldiers from the time the fort protected the coast from the Revolutionary era through World War II.
The programs feature weapons and drill demonstrations, a look at garrison life and children’s programs.
There have been three forts at the site at the end of the island overlooking Charleston Harbor.
The first was the palmetto log and sand fort where patriots turned back the British fleet in 1776. A new fort was constructed in 1798 but was washed away by a hurricane four years later.
The present fort was completed in 1809 and was an active fort until 1947.
