Congressman all for new Jasper port in SC

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson says he’s one of the only lawmakers in South Carolina who is politically incorrect enough to favor a new port terminal in Jasper County.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/M6nYmM) that the 2nd District congressman spoke to a group of Republicans in Beaufort on Monday.

Wilson said that he, Gov. Nikki Haley and state Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort are among the state’s few politicians who feel the Jasper port on the Savannah River is needed along with ports in Savannah, Ga., and Charleston.

South Carolina and Georgia have spent several million dollars to develop the port although some lawmakers question whether it is needed.

Davis says opponents of the Jasper port are more concerned about protecting turf than the long-range needs of the region.
