Parris Island commander honored at Title IX event

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — The first woman commander of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris island is being honored with an influential group of women who played college or high school athletics.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/NDFoKG) that Brig. Gen. Lori Reynolds is being recognized in Washington on Thursday at an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title Nine that requires equal access to athletic activities for women.

Reynolds played basketball at the U.S. Naval Academy. Others being honored include comediennes Ellen DeGeneres and Tina Fey, Tennessee’s Pat Summit and tennis star Venus Williams.

All 40 women played high school or college athletics after Title Nine was enacted in 1972.
