Reptar is still with the USC baseball team

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — If you watched the game last night, chances are you heard there was talk amongst the team that if anything started going south, things could change from “Fear the Fish” to “Fear the Flush.” Now that the team has lost we wanted to hear from fans about the superstition, known to many as “the fish.” “They had the fish at a game and they were behind and they won. They thought it was lucky and they’ve been bringing the fish with them everywhere until last night when they lost,” says Ray Jones, Gamecock fan. In a nutshell, that is the story behind the fish named, “Reptar.” He’s been with the team win after win. “Everybody has superstitions, that team believes in the fish,” says Jones. He’s become a sensation with t-shirts, even chants. “When we put the fish tail on it, nobody can hit it,” says one Gamecock fan. And now thanks to the McMillan trio from Lexington, he has his own rap. Lauren, Kathryn and Robert McMillan each have their own part, but they say Robert’s is their favorite. But do superstitions like “Fear the Fish” really work? “I don’t believe in them,” says Patti Hancock, Gamecock fan “Well, I just think the best man out there will win,” says Glenn Bell, Gamecock fan. While some fans say now, others have gameday practices of their own. “She just crosses her fingers, my mom,” says Lauren McMillan, Gamecock fan and member of the group “M3.” Frederick Donald told ABC Columbia News on Facebook that he too wears his hat inside out, just like the team does when it’s time to rally the bats. And just inside the dugout with the team, is reptar. “I like him, I like uh, the guys come out and the do the little think you know and they make a good score,” says Bell. Robert McMillan says he has fish of his own at home. “One is even garnet like Reptar,” says Robert. And while Reptar may not have been so lucky last night, fans say he should stay around. “If they believe in it, keep on it,” says Jones. ABC Columbia News checked with the USC Athletic Media Relations Department today and they tell us at last check, Reptar was alive and well and with the team. So, “Fear the Fish,” continues.
