Benedict Football Gets National TV Game

COLUMBIA, S.C. (BC SID) — The Benedict College home football game on September 6 against Bowie State has been selected as one of six NCAA Division II national game of the week, and will be televised on CBS Sports Network. “This is phenomenal,” said Benedict head football coach James Woody. “This shows that Benedict is doing great things and the respect that the NCAA has for Benedict to promote them with a national television game. This is a great honor.” The NCAA Division II and CBS Sports Network announced their six-game 2012 regular-season football television schedule. Division II Vice President Mike Racy said the program, now in its seventh year, has been good for the participating institutions and Division II in general. “This will be the seventh season of Division II regular-season coverage on CBS Sports Network,” Racy said. “After this year, national telecasts will have originated from 35 different Division II football stadiums, and about 25 percent of our football-playing members will have had regular-season national television exposure. It’s been great for the division, and the schools say it’s also been valuable for them.” The Thursday night game will kick off at 8 .m. at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium. The game will be the home opener for the Tigers. Benedict is coming off a 2-8 season, but coach Woody is optimistic the Tigers will show improvement on the field in his first full season. Woody took over midway through last season, and the football coaching staff has worked hard during the offseason with recruiting and spring practice. The team returns for fall practice on August 8. “This will be exciting for the kids,” Woody said. “This is great exposure for our students, our alumni and our fans. We really appreciate the support from (Benedict President) Dr. (David H.) Swinton and (Director of Athletics) Willie Washington to help make this happen.” Bowie State went 4-6 last season, including a 31-14 victory over Benedict. CBS Sports Network is available across the country through local cable, video and telco providers on Verizon FiOS Channel 94 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 643 (1643 in HD) and via satellite on DirecTV Channel 613 and Dish Network Channel 158.
