Roth Gets Call Against Kent State

(WOLO) — Wednesday night rain has earned Michael Roth the start for Thursday’s elimination game against Kent State. USC made the announcement late Wednesday night. The Gamecocks play Kent State Thursday at noon on ESPN2. If Carolina wins they will have to turn around and play Arkansas at 9 p.m. Thursday night. Monday night, Arkansas snapped USC’s NCAA Tournament record winning streak of 22 games, beating the Gamecocks 2-1. Jordan Montgomery, a freshman from Sumter, was originally scheduled to start against Kent State before the Wednesday night game was postponed because of rain. Roth, who has started the last two national championship clinching games for Carolina, has an 8-1 record this season. The senior from Greer, SC has a 2.60 ERA this year but has the fifth best College World Series ERA of all-time. In six career CWS starts, the left-hander has allowed eight earned runs in 44.2 innings for a 1.61 ERA. Saturday, he picked up the win in USC’s CWS opener against Florida becoming only the fourth pitcher to have CWS wins in three different years.
