Lawyer drowns in Lake Murray near his Chapin home

CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say an 87-year-old lawyer has died after he drowned while wading in water in Lake Murray just outside his Chapin home.

Investigators say Jackson Barwick was in waist deep water around 6 p.m. Saturday when he started calling for help. He went under water for a short time before his family could rescue him.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says CPR was started, but Barwick died at the hospital an hour later.

Barwick was a World War II veteran and a senior partner at Columbia law firm Belser, Baker, Barwick, Ravenel and Bender until his retirement in 2000.
